Cost of tree surgeons south east

I was looking on mumsnet for a rough estimate to cut down a hideous 40ft conifer.
Well, I organised a lot of quotes from qualified and insured tree surgeons and they ranged from £750 Shock to £250, with most quotes being around £500.
The tree surgeon who I hired (for £250) was professional, punctual and also pruned a medium sized tree next to the conifer he felled all for the £250. So my advice is shop around. The quotes vary wildly.

Can I ask for a pm with this guy's details please? We have a similar job to do but the quotes have made me postpone it.
I hope tonight's storm won't fell the conifer.

Cutting down is cheaper (and easier) than pruning: often once they have come out for the maim job it is easy to bung a few extra bits in (as long as they are happy time wise)
Trouble is if you don't know them a lot of it is guesswork as to how skilled they are...

I used a very good chap for a large eucalyptus reduction (they are based near Guildford but do travel) and that was about £300 a couple of years ago, they did a great job in taming a monster eucalyptus and making the remainder look attractive! Pm me if anyone wants contact details.

Oh and the chap I used said if in doubt go for someone who's registered with the Arborial Association as it means that they follow high standards of- I dunno- coiffage (and aren't just a chap with a chainsaw who's stencilled "tree surgeon" on the side of their white van....
