What style handles in this sad 90s kitchen?

Can't afford to change the kitchen in this house. It's serviceable but of its time. Pine MFI style with square detailing. The bit I really hate are the huge white ceramic knobs on the drawers and doors.

If I can change those then I can put up with it. I don't like brassy knobs :) so what would work?

I'd go for non matching, funky painted porcelain knobs so you don't have holes in the cupboard doors, and try and make the rest of the kitchen a bit boho/70s as that would still work with the pine you can't replace. Could look pretty cool and retro if done right?

I like lessons idea. Anthropologie have a fan selection.

Could you paint all of the units grey?

I am contemplating painting the units but it isn't simple as there are glass doors and a breakfast bar.

Those anthropology handles are cute and I may well order some for the bedroom wardrobes but they don't chime for the kitchen. It's not the right kitchen for boho. DH is not boho! We used to have white shaker door with dark wood sleek worktop in our old house which is more us.

Thank you btw! Was a bit surprised to have answers :)

Could you maybe post some pictures? It's hard to visualise and give advice without them?

burnishedsilver · 16/07/2014 00:10

I think it needs to be painted or have the doors replaced. Handles alone won't do it.

HauntedNoddyCar · 16/07/2014 00:14

How's this? The tiny squares are raised. The tiles are white. The worktop is cream.

Please don't say they look nice! It looks better in the pic.

This is more indicative. I am away to bed now though.

Sand the little squares back, paint the units (something along the lines of elephants breath might work with the counter top) and add a satin chrome knob.

I hate that idea of having a drawer on top of each under counter cupboard!

Knob

petitdonkey · 16/07/2014 09:26

My friend has just pained her wooden kitchen and put chrome knobs on the doors (similar to burnished's link) then cup handles on the drawers. It looks lovely.

marymcb · 16/07/2014 11:10

We bought some lovely cupboard knobs from here. I personally love the glass ones and the art deco ones but it's a great site to get some ideas.

wowfudge · 16/07/2014 17:02

It would look good with antiqued metal knobs - think Arts and Crafts. Square ones would work really well, reflecting the little squares in the wood.

Your kitchen is gorgeous - certainly compared to ours!

HauntedNoddyCar · 16/07/2014 20:14

Burnished you probably are right and they'd look better but there's so much else to do and I think the glass doors with brown carcasses will stymie it :(

I don't like the drawers much. They won't survive the refit.

Petit I have a hankering for cup handles but DH isn't keen. Sigh.

Mary ooh I like the iron handles. Which would be a bit Arts & crafts as Wow says.

Thank you wow but it looks much nicer in those pictures than in RL. More orangey pine and cheaper looking. With a fretwork wine rack stuck on the end of the breakfast bar.

The whole house needs some love so lots to do and lots to save.

I think painting your cupboard doors is your only real option if you don't like your kitchen but can't afford to replace it; you can get them professionally spray painted which is a lot cheaper than the price of a replacement kitchen. What style would you choose to have, if you could pick one? This might help you narrow down the door treatment.

RaisingSteam · 18/07/2014 00:11

Cup handles OK but only on drawers IMO, on doors have a knob or handle in the same finish. Screwfix have a good selection.

Or how about cast iron? plain knobs they also have drawer pulls.

Agree re painting though, it would give it a massive facelift, so buy nice knobs now in case you decide to do it later.
