I can hear the water running but I can't work out where!

Water pressure downstairs is low. Upstairs is fine. I can hear water going through the pipes like a tap is on or the washing machine is filling.
I can't find a leak anywhere.

I've got a plumber coming on Tuesday but any suggestions before that?

Have you checked your loo(s) cistern(s)? If the ballcock's not working properly, it'll be constantly filling and overflowing; it'll have an overflow pipe so you won't see any evidence of a leak (unless you look outside.) This may be fixed quite simply by resetting the screw thingy (technical term that).

Where is your cold water tank?
Do you have a closed system for your central heating?
Most likely your tank is at the top of the house - possibly the loft..
There will be a ballcock or valve somewhere that is jammed and is causing the tank to fill constantly and the water will be emptying into an overflow pipe either outside or into a drain.

Don't climb into the loft if you are on your own in the house in case you fall.

No tanks at all here. Not a header tank or a hot water tank.

My thinking is one of the toilets. Nothing coming out of the overflows though.

More than likely toilet then.

Pipbin · 11/07/2014 23:47

I'm guessing so. They are these new fangled push button flush jobs and I don't understand them.

Some of them have an internal overflow on the cistern so it'll be trickling into the pan iirc.

Those push button things are a nightmare for sticking.
You have to just rattle them a bit and usually that unsticks them.

It could be the downstairs one. I noticed that about half the water in the bowl has drained away this morning.

Actually the downstairs loo is just odd. The washing machine drains out through the waste pipe.

Food colouring! That's PigletJohn's advice. I think. Pop a couple of drops in the cistern and see where it goes

Pipbin · 12/07/2014 00:40

Solved.

DH had left the outside tap running..............for 6 hours.
I think we have no garden left.

Still. I know where all the shut off valves are now.

Sorry, but LOL! Glad your problem is sorted, remember to cancel the plumber. Grin

Hope you're not on a meter!

Pipbin · 12/07/2014 09:13

As we went back to bed DH said 'thank goodness we aren't on a meter'. I then broke the news that we are!
