Creaking stairs!

I find the staircase in our house extremely irritating as it is very creaky. Most of the step squeak and creak and I always try to walk close to the wall to make minimum noise. Is it possible to fix them so as to make them quiet and would it be v expensive?

Can you get to the underside of the stairs? If so little blocks where the tread meets the riser, screwed into both the tread and riser can make a big difference.

Baby powder helps stop them squeaking for a while until you can do something more permanent.

Thanks for the link, I think we could get underneath without too much disruption. Even a reduction in amount of squeaking would be worth it.

Where do you put the baby powder? I'll try it
