Finding a surveyor...

Our mortgage offer included a free valuation so we found it would be cheaper to employ our own RICS surveyor to do a home buyers survey separately for ourselves. But how do we find a good one?! It's a house built in 1978 so still in good nick so it shouldn't be a big complicated thing, but I would like to have a bit of personal contact with the surveyor afterwards. When we bought our current house the survey comments were so cryptic and littered with spelling mistakes but despite trying for days I could not get the surveyor (chosen by the mortgage company) onn the phone to explain what the hell he was going on about.

Is there a checkatrade type site for surveyors?! Or does anyone have a recommendation for a surveyor in Surrey (Woking)?!

Are you using a mortgage broker? Ours recommended one for us and they were great - not your area though.

reallymoving.com will get you quotes from local surveyors, and reviews - then you can give them a call for some idea. Make sure that your expensive report won't just include lots of recommendations to call in specialists, no idea how they get away with this!

Don't Yell have a list of surveyors? I would contact a few and see what services they offer. You can always insist a report is written in plain English or go back to the surveyor for clarification.
