What do you have to put keys on/put shoes/coats etc?

My house is like this (not a cottage). Keys are placed on a bookcase next to the door, coats are dumped on the chair and shoes are all over the place

If I were organised, I'd get something like this and put a bench underneath for shoe storage.

Coat hooks by front door, trunk for shoes underneath. Hats and gloves in the coffee table drawers

Keys etc are in a bowl in the kitchen or my handbag

Good question. Our front door of the one storey cottage we're buying opens into a narrow hallway with bedrooms either side (they didn't use to be bedrooms). So we're either going to have to find very thin storage or going to make the side entrance into the kitchen, our front door, which I think is more traditional for a cottage?

Our front door opens into the dining room with open plan stairs. Theres a small understairs area so I built the unit shown in the photos to fill the space. Its double depth Ikea boxes mounted on boards with rollers. Each of the five of us has a box for shoes/ bits then the smaller slots are for school bags, handbags, umbrellas and shopping bags.

The coats are on hooks behind the kitchen door, which is off the dining room.

Shoes under stairs, keys across the room in a basket on the dresser and coats on hooks but half way across the room, hidden behind a bit of wall. Pushchair is in the gap between the door and the sofa. Small side table between the other sofa and door is a dumping ground for post/ handbag etc. I dream of having a hallway one day!
