British Gas - upgrade to smart meter?

We've received a letter from BG offering to upgrade to a smart meter. Apparently it sends the readings directly to them by internet.

We are planning on moving from British Gas as soon as we can get organised (currently renovating the house to move back in) as they have taken 5 months to sort out their billing issues with us (including sending us bailiff's warning letters!) and they have been dreadful customer-wise.

What happens if we let them install their smart meter and then we change supplier?

If you switch away from British Gas your smart meter may not continue to be smart. Depending on who you switch to, it will most likely revert back to dumb mode so you'll have to send in meter readings. This will change in a couple of years and it will be easy to switch between companies and not suffer a loss of service.

You don't need to have a smart meter installed yet. You could switch and then see if your new supplier offers you one.
