Stunning Envy

mumblechum1 · 18/06/2014 12:14

DH won't let me book any more viewings till we have at least an offer on ours though Sad.

He knows I'll get all obsessive and start talking about bridging etc...

It is beautiful. It is used as a film set for things like Harry Potter etc. The only downsides I can see to Laycock are that the properties are probably overpriced because of location so you probably won't get as much for your money. The other thing is that the village is very touristy so very difficult to park and you would have to get used to busloads of tourists roaming around it at peak times of the year.

It is absolutely beautiful though.

Thanks for input Frumpy!

Gorgeous if a bit chintzy but yes you are besieged by film crews. Love the walled garden.

Mylovelylovelyhorse · 18/06/2014 15:50

V v v touristy, but lovely. Nearest town is chippenham which is a bit shit but it's close too bath too

Mylovelylovelyhorse · 18/06/2014 15:52

Oh and it's Lacock. Not to be snooty but if you're researching the area it might be easier to get good matches

Quangle · 18/06/2014 15:55

oh goodness that's lovely. Envy is eating me up Wink

Judging by the garden pics, it's been on the market a few months.

Sunnyshores · 18/06/2014 20:33

Lacock is lovely, but Chippenham where you'd go for your day to day needs is not. It does have very good senior schools though and there are great private schools in the area too.
All considered though, I wouldnt live there because of Chippenham. How about Corsham, that's beautiful and nearer Bath. Or in a village nearer Devizes?

We really don't have a clue where to live. Just in the course of the last 2 days we've been seriously considering Pangbourne/Streatley, Wilts, Hungerford villages and now Cotswolds.

DH is 52 and likely to be put out to grass in the next few years (and can commute 3 days a week in meantime), DS is at Uni and unlikely to live with us again as he's going to Sandhurst once he graduates and I run my own will writing business and can work anywhere in England and Wales.

It's exciting to know we can live pretty much wherever we like as long as it's within 2 hours of Brenford where dh works but we're almost spoiled for choice and haven't a clue really. Must be in an AONB though.

Massive house and garden for just two of you - do you really want all that work!

mumblechum1 · 19/06/2014 08:50

We definitely want a fair bit of land. Unfortunately you rarely see a small house with a big garden.

We've always lived in 5+bed houses so are used to rattling around Smile

Lacock is partly owned by the National Trust I think and parking can be a bit iffy in the summer with tourists. I have family in the newer bit over the main road but lots of relatives in the graveyard.

littlesupersparks · 19/06/2014 13:07

Lacock is lovely. We are about 30 minutes away. The garden centre is quite a destination!

IhadsexwithanelfinIceland · 19/06/2014 13:14

Does your DH work in Brentford? Can't find Brenford? We moved from Ealing to South Cotswolds three years ago, we live near Kemble train station which goes into Paddington in 1hr 20. Cirencester is a much nicer town than Chippenham, as is Cheltenham which is only 20 mins away. Quite nice

Yes, Brentford. But can work from home 2 days a week. I very much like Cheltenham, go there for weekends sometimes but that would be too far a commute I think.

more land

IhadsexwithanelfinIceland · 19/06/2014 14:50

My DH commutes to the city every day from Kemble.

TalkinPeace · 19/06/2014 22:16

Lacock is lovely BUT it is film set city
have a look around Marlborough or Corsham or Melksham

the Pewsey Vale between Devizes and Marlborough is beautiful. Train from Pewsey to Paddington

irregularegular · 23/06/2014 12:04

Well it's certainly a lot more for your money than Goring/Streatley! Tbh if you don't need the train to Paddington/Oxford and the young family friendly vibe, then I'd go further West too.
