If you have a very large kitchen island unit, what's hanging above it?

I have a really very substantial square-ish central island, and the light above it has come a cropper. It was a square frame suspended on wires with a spotlight mounted on each side of the frame. I didn't really like it, but I really need the light, the rest of the lighting in the kitchen is gloomy.

Lighting inspiration for kitchen islands seems to assume that they are long and thin, with lovely rows of pendants above. This won't work. I don't see anything in the same style as the old light in my local lighting stores.

Do you like your island lighting? Any ideas? Could I just stick one massive pendant up there?

Neptune have a light that sounds suitable. It has two huge square shades.

The shades are much bigger irl. It's not for a narrow Island.

I have this www.johnlewis.com/original-btc-phane-ceiling-light-large/p150874 mostly because I needed the glass shade to let lots of light out. I am a bit shocked at the price it didn't cost me that much. There are cheaper alternatives around if you can find them. I love it.

I put the lights middle-ish and slightly one side so they are not over the hob.
It looks off centre but its fine

Pagwatch could you tell me about your extractor fan please? Make and if it works well. That is just what I'm looking for in my new kitchen and would love a recommendation as I seem to only be getting negative comments about it not working well as it is to far from the hob.

You can get extractors that come up from inside the work surface or get a powerful ceiling mounted one with lights. I have spot lights suspended from parallel wires above my island but I have a high ceiling. You could maybe ceiling mount spotlights.

I have a broken extractor fan and would like to replace it with a higher one like Pagwatch's. More info needed here too!

Hey - yes, it works really well. It's very powerful and efficient. I wanted something unobtrusive but that actually worked and I'm really pleased with this one.
The kitchen dudes found it for me but I'm sure I have the details in my file. Can you bear with me and I'll dig it out tomorrow. Promise.

Thanks all, I would never have found that Neptune light, but I really like the idea of two lamps, reflecting the squareness. Tobias that's a lovely light, and it looks like cheaper options might be smaller options, so maybe that could be the actual one if I just go Big Shade. It's very generous of you to share a picture, Pag - your lovely row of pendants do look lovely. I was trying to look at it with fresh eyes last night, but I don't think I could march them down or across. My best idea for the space would be some sort of clump of pendants with cool industrial style exposed cords. The kitchen is nothing like that, though!

Pagwatch I properly have the hump! Thank you. We're having a kitchen Island (with hob) installed shortly. I have run trhe first fix electrics (and had all the plastering done) and have realised that I've put the light right above the centre of the island -when it should have been off centre (and above the seats!) Ballbags!!!!!!
