Side return question

We would like to get our side return done to extend the kitchen. Has anyone else done this? Is it best to use an architect or can an experienced builder do it? I realise we need planning permission etc

If you need planning permission then you need to submit drawings to scale etc. So I think you still need an architect (or someone professional who can do this). May be wrong though!

Is it your only access to the rear of the house? The previous owners of our house built into the side return leaving the garage as access to the back, we would love to build a room at the back of our garage and now can't without closing off the access. I really wish they hadn't.......
