Looking for a brilliant make of toilet

I'll be putting in a downstairs loo and want a pan and cistern that will flush well in spite of water saving regulations. Local bathroom store says they don't get feedback on flushing, but they sell a lot more loo brushes nowadays...
Do you have a newish toilet that you would recommend?

Shame they don't do symphonic loos anymore. never had a problem with one of them. they just sucked everything down no problem. watching with interest. er the thread, not stuff going down the pan!

We had one from bathstore and won't be making that mistake again. No toilet seats fit properly on it even the bathstore one. The holes must be wrong and so the hinges on the seats break after a while.

The really cheap one I bought from B&Q is doing well so far It was £52 iirc - I should possibly have upgraded to the posher seat but honestly it's ok. The plumber commented on it being a really good little toilet. It's only been in a couple of months so couldn't comment on its long term performance

The Roca ones come in all sorts of shapes. If you have a modern shape, do you suppose a replacement seat would be a nightmare?

I find a flapper valve, rather than a syphon, gives the most forceful flush any particular cistern and pan are capable of.

I hate cisterns with two buttons on the lid, almost as much as cisterns that are boxed in and tiled over for maximum inaccessibility.

I agree on syphonic WCs. When I bought and modernised my first house, the syphonic WC cost more than the rest of the bathroom suite, including taps, put together.

Very occasionally you see them on ebay, but they are usually Harvest Gold or Aubergine.

We never had a problem with our duravit one, nice solid seat too. We had it for 10yrs before moving house. I'm getting the same one for this house in the bathroom refit.

I dislike the push buttons too. I am also cross about being beholden to building regs and hence not being able to use a second hand WC, without fitting it after approval.
I am nursing a lot of anger over this whole toilet thing.
However going to learn about syphonic and flappers next, thanks!

syphonic WCs are AFAIK no longer made, and were always rare as expensive.

If you had a white one, in used but unchipped condition, it would fetch £hundreds. Not least from me.

the Fluidmaster Flapper Valve looks like this

Imagine a big hole at the bottom of the cistern, with a round trapdoor over it. When you lightly press the handle, the hatch opens, and water gushes straight down the hole with no impediment. The flapper floats, so it stays open until all the water has passed through, then it flops down again to seal the hole.

It is incredibly simple, with hardly any working parts, and, when open, allows the water to gush through with no obstruction or complex path.

I have used no other since I first came across them.

I noticed today that it is no longer listed by Screwfix, perhaps the makers are trying to guide us towards their more complex fittings.
