Is renting from council cheeper than a private let (Scotland)

Right now I don't know what to do
I've been on the housing list since I was 16 now 30 with no offer decided to move out of my parents house in jan now in a private let which is 550 a month but I pay 260 finding it hard just now to pay that plus everything else
Would I be cheeper with a council house and how can I increase my chances of getting one or do I just owe up to my parents that's it's all to much and can't cope

A private let is generally more expensive. Don't struggle on if your parents would have you back home. Make an appointment with the council and see what the time scale might be, for getting a council property. Good luck.

Thanks just don't seem to have any money to spare for things like treats for my daughter etc had money was never a issue when I was at home got a meeting with money matters on Monday again so see what they have to say and advise me on
I know my mum would have me back but it's the fact of admitting I've made a mistake in private letting plus they brought me a lot of stuff for the house

I think if the council are paying some of your rent in private accommodation it'll be the same amount in council accommodation but I could be wrong!

Don't be daft OP. I'm sure your DM would rather have you back and happy, than stressed and skint. Guitar has a point. If you are getting housing benefit, that would probably mean your percentage of rent that you pay is the same. Anyway, see how you get on, on Monday. You'll get up to date advice.

I read that as "is renting from council cheaper than a private jet". Grin

I get housing benefit just under £300 a month so I have to pay the 260 difference which is difficult when you've got other stuff to pay

With the council I'm sure it's fortnightly you pay I'll need to ask around about that one hopefully come Monday I'll come to a decision
