Why would they need to contact ME for access when the survey is being done on our purchase?

The survey for our purchase is being done this week. At the application stage I had to give the vendors details so they could contact her regarding the survey (private sale, not EA). I got a text confirming the survey appointment and it said the valuer would be in touch if they needed access to the property. Why would it say that? Its not my place to let them in and they must have contacted the vendor to arrange the survey with her.

Or is a standard message they send out?

I bet it's a cockup. Someone is filing nails/flicking hair/playing grand theft auto rather than concentrating on the job and has mixed up your contact details. You've got the message rather than the vendor.

get back to the surveyors and tell them that if they can't get basic admin right, you don't have much confidence in their survey.

The message was from the mortgage company. We upgraded the basic survey to the homebuyers report through them.

in that case, contact them and tell them to sort it out!

If you're having a homebuyers report they will certainly need access to I'd make sure the vendor can give them access. Our purchaser only had a valuation but surveyor still needed access and was at the property for 40 mins having a good look around.
