Towel rails - any plumbers out there?!

I've just moved into a lovely house with big towel rail radiators in the bathrooms.

But for the love of god I can't switch the damn things off.

25 degrees outside and they're pumping out heat. I've turned off the heating and they're still on. I've fiddled with thermostat controls at the bottom of the rails, but they just click round and nothing happens.

Could they be part of the hot water heating system? Hot water's on a timer setting that I havent investigated properly yet.

Am very confused.... and very hot!

My hall and bathroom (towel rail) radiators are heat leak and cannot be turned off.

...we have an elderly oil range so not a modern system at all.

I believe they can so maybe it's time to start investigating?!

Our towel rails are on the hot water system.

So if it is part of the hot water system, when are the best times to heat up? 2 hrs morning and 2 hrs evening? or longer?

You appear to be saying that these towel rails are heated using the circuit thst feeds the hot water cylinder. This is not very unusual and is a good way to do it.

You also say that they have thermostatic radiator valves which do not work.

It is possible that the heads have been incorrectly fitted, and it is possible that they have gone wrong. Can you see a brand name on them? Can you post a pic? How old do you think they are? Are they the same as the valves on all the other radiators in the house, and do the other ones seem to work?

What colour is your hot water cylinder?
