Moving Housse - what's the quickest you've packed up

Just wondering what are the quickest times people have packed there house up before moving. When we moved from our one bed flat (without children) we packed up in three days.

We've had a real hiccup in the chain, don't think we'll really know until 27/28 May if we can met the deadline of 5th June which the top of the chain has. Obviously can't book removers and get boxes until we know it's fairly certain.

Our biggest difficulty is packing the crap we carry around from house to house in the loft, garage and sheds. But I suppose you could do this well in advance. If you've chosen your movers, then you can get boxes delivered regardless of date of move.

Other than the above, 4 bed house packed in 4 loooooong days by me and partner.

BananaPie · 10/05/2014 21:23

Could you afford to pay for packers? Think we paid about £300 extra to the removal company and they did it all the day before the move. Worth every penny!

beaglesaresweet · 11/05/2014 01:01

Banana, out of interest, how many packers did you hire for that one day?

One company said to me that they would send one guy - surely it's unrealistic for one guy to pack a lot of stuff (many fragiles too) from a 3-bed? (sorry for a brief hijack, OP).

HawkeyeInChaos · 11/05/2014 02:27

I had packers. Best money I ever spent. Two guys packed up a very cluttered 3-bed and garage in a fraction over one day (they spent one day packing and loading up everything except the essentials we'd need overnight. Then came back the following morning, packed up the rest and we were gone by mid morning). Fantastic.

HerRoyalNotness · 11/05/2014 02:41

We normally have 2 packers for a 3-4bed. Box up in one day, load the truck the next morning.

eskinosekiss · 11/05/2014 07:49

Err, 4 hours? We thought we had paid for packers, they turned up on moving day (it was to be an overnight move) asking why isn't the house packed up, and said unless you pack it up by lunchtime we're off the job.

We packed very fast.

Notyetthere · 11/05/2014 09:06

If you intend to pack yourself then start now. pack anything that you reckon you won't need use of for a while.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 11/05/2014 09:10

About 6 hours the night before Grin

Crutchlow35 · 11/05/2014 09:12

Packers every time. Usually a good half day and 4 of them. Kitchen stuff takes quite a while.

WeAreEternal · 11/05/2014 09:16

The fastest was when we had a packing/removal company do it for us, they packed our 3 bed in 7 hours (I think there was four of them)

The fastest we did it ourselves (just me and DP) was two days. Also a 3 bed. We did it all it a weekend, it was very organised and not particularly stressful.

One of our first moves I did all the packing by my self (DP was away), I packed up our large 2 bed house in three days but it was very stressful and I swore I would never do it again.

Artandco · 11/05/2014 09:17

One day.

Always pack day before move

sherbetpips · 11/05/2014 09:19

Took my sister a week to pack up the last house (yes she is a very nice sister doing that for us) whilst we were at work. We did the evenings but it was a hard slog of constant packing.

sherbetpips · 11/05/2014 09:21

It's the bits that are awkward, carefully packing plates, glasses, etc takes ages.

MrsCosmopilite · 11/05/2014 09:22

Circumstances beyond our control dictated that we packed on day one and moved (whilst packing final bits) on day two.

Four weeks in and a load of stuff is still unpacked as it needs to be sorted into 'keep, donate or throw '

MrsCosmopilite · 11/05/2014 09:22

Should add that we had a packer on day one. Well worth the investment.

ScarlettlovesRhett · 11/05/2014 09:28

1 day. We have moved 5 times in 13 years though, so are pro at it!

The best way to do it is to have a designated room where you can stack boxes; pack up all non essentials and store in that room - keep out the things you know you will use over the coming weeks.

Make every box 'room specific' so unpacking at the other end is a breeze - even if you are left with a couple of half empty boxes.

When it comes to moving week, you should only have minimum stuff left unpacked so you can pack in a couple of hours tbh.

Moving house is great for having a good clear out, it's amazing how much shit you accumulate in a short while!

BertieBotts · 11/05/2014 09:31

You can definitely buy boxes - start packing all of the stuff that you don't use like the off season clothes and the old stuff in the cupboards and clearing out the stuff you want to get rid of.

Fourarmsv2 · 11/05/2014 10:08

We tend to have packers and do the declutter as we unpack. That's with Forces moves so no DIY etc to be done after moving in.

I've gone out for the day leaving a normal (although tidy everything in it's place) house and come back to it empty several times :)

noddyholder · 11/05/2014 11:32

I always get a storage room for 6 weeks and do it gradually

Artandco · 11/05/2014 11:39

I think we must not have much stuff tbh.

I can't imagine it taking weeks here. Bedroom would be packed in 1 hr max, that's including bubble wrapping lamps etc.

Kitchen longest but only 2 ish hours.

If we haven't used in 6 months here we donate.

samsam123 · 11/05/2014 15:26

just 4 hours I hate clutter :)

BananaPie · 11/05/2014 17:17

One packer did our whole 2 bed house in one day, but then came back with his mates the next day to finish off and load up. The next time we moved, three packers did our 3 bed house in less than a day - they packed and loaded up in about six hours (one bloke was on constant kitchen packing duty - they individually wrap each plate etc)

starfish4 · 11/05/2014 19:53

Thanks for your replies. Would rather pack myself even if it'll be a nightmare. Sounds like it can be done in the time we'll have if it has to be. Have already got together contact numbers for the utilities companies and have letters loaded on computer to notify others, so that won't take too long to sort.

1 day also. 5 moves in as many years makes you a bit of a pro... that was the worst 5 years though.

The packers we had were next to useless.

yummumto3girls · 11/05/2014 23:22

We have been sorting/selling/ packing for weeks!! We move on Thursday and think we will just about be ready. It's taken me 2 days to do the kitchen (including having a good clean). We have been here 17 years so have a lot of stuff!!
