Chatham?

My son is talking about buying a house in Chatham. Is it really affordable for first time buyers? Commutable to London? Anything to be wary of?

Bits of chatham are ok and bits are very very rough. Its very commutable but the trains cost alot of money (£500+ per month).
Its nicknamed Chavham!
