Cowboy builder compensation - any top tips?

About 18 months ago we had our kitchen redone, which included putting in double doors into the rear wall - using an RSJ - and blocking up the existing door.

The builders were a bunch of halfwits, and made a catalogue of errors, the most serious one is that there is now water ingress at various points around the double doors. The plasterwork is blown, and goodness knows what's happening to the brickwork underneath.

Naturally we want to get this sorted, but all quotes we've had to put it right have been between £2K and £4K, which we don't have lying around.

We could take the original builders to the small claims court, I gather, but would first need to ask them to come back and put right the work (as per their contract). But I don't want them to do it, as they're obviously incompetent.

Has anyone successfully got money back - either from cowboys or the courts - in such a situation?
