Advice on moving house

We need to move before our lg goes to school. She will be 2 in September so have 1.5/2 years to do so. We do not like the local school and it has a bad reputation.
Ideally we are looking for shared ownership, would prefer new build but would be happy with a resale if in the right area.
Our only problem is, the new builds are highly sought after and they only sell a handful at a time as shared ownership but if we waited, we would get the perfect house, in an area we like.
Or we could go for a resale which there are plenty off, not the perfect house, in an ok area but not exactly what either of us want. If we hold out for a new build, which they plan to start in end 2014 due to complete mid 2015, but don't get one, we will be stuck where we are and lg going to a school were not happy to send her too.
What would you guys do? This will be our first bought own home so means a lot to us to be happy with where we move to.

Tricky. What's the biggest priority? Good school but so-so house? Why not start looking at non-newbuilds now, you might be surprised by what you like? What is it about newbuilds that appeals? Sorry, more questions than answers!

How about moving to a rented house in a good catchment area then you can wait for the right house to come up?

Good school is top priority but I don't want to get her into a good school then feel down about where we live and where we hope to bring our next baby into in the next 2 years. We have had a little look but the second hand houses all have a massive premium which is also what's putting us off. There is just something about moving into a completely new fresh house, have a clean state to start from etc. And the only problem is with moving into rented is tha at the moment where we rent is owned my OH's bosses which means were living in a 3 double bed rooms house with massive kitchen for £600 so for us to find something for that price range round here would mean going into a flat (in a worse area) this is why we are sooo stuck on what would be for the best :(
