Garden Planning

My husband and I have just bought a new house with a north facing garden. It's a townhouse so it's quite tall and we're aware and not bothered that it won't get a lot of sun. Also, we'll be able to let the wee one out without worrying too much about sun burn etc. Neither of us are keen gardeners so we want something low maintenance with very little grass. Mostly slabs and some decking at the bottom of the garden. It's a good size but as neither of us have had to do a garden before we have absolutely no idea what to expect cost wise. It's a brand new house so the garden is currently top soil only. We'd like to get it done in summer so that our daughter can get the benefit.
Has anyone else done this recently? I know it depends on size but rough guide to price would be useful if anyone has any info.

Thank you!

There are loads of little-used areas on mumsnet, I found the Gardening section recently myself.
