How much to knock a fireplace out?

We have a good awful 60's (I think) tiled fireplace with disconnected gas fire in it. It's ugly, broken tired, non working and brown!

How much would it cost to have it removed please?

I'd be curious to know this myself. Buying a place that has an old gas fire. Bleurgh.

How much to open a bricked up fireplace?

It cost me £30, but the gas chap was here already doing a radiator, so that might have made it cheaper.

QueMierda, it cost me £50 (mate's rates) + another £50 materials to have a bricked up fireplace opened up in our attic floor bedroom & a Victorian cast iron firesurround inserted (surround was another £35 on ebay).

Doesn't work at present because the chimney needs lining, but looks lovely. Hoping to have the chimney sorted by next winter!

Is that £30 to have it knocked out or are you answering the other q? Thanks.

Are you knocking out the chimney breast entirely or just the fire?

If chimney breast then I was quoted about a grand, for all the supports and whatnot.

The fire...erm, nothing? I guess you may want a gas engineer to come and check it's all disconnected properly. 50 quid.

Opening up a fireplace.... It will be breezeblocks, easy to knock out with a sledgehammer, then tidy up the edges. We've done this on countless fireplaces. So, cost of a sledgehammer and one of those brick cutting tools.

No not the chimney breast, and the gas fire is fully disconnected and capped off by a professional. I meant the actually tiled mantelpiece, hearth, and surround. It's one if those ugly 60's tiled things with the little 'step' along the top.

I want the chimney breast and floor flat to recarpet and re wallpaper maybe put in a fake plug in mantle piece and fire jobby.

We had a brick monstrosity here. DH put his chisel behind the top brick and the whole thing essentially fell off the wall. We then knocked out the breezeblocks, tidied up the edges, put it a new surround and had it plastered. I'd just get removing the tile and see what you're left with.

Really depends where you are. If London them you could expect to pay for 1 days labour which can cost you anything from 150 to 250 a day. Remember that the hole will need blocking off and the edges skimming to blend into the walls. I would recommend using a sheet of hardibacker or cement board instead of plasterboard as it will not be effected by any moisture drip from the chimney. I would also put a louvred air vent in it. The rubble will also need disposing of so I would choose someone who will sort this for you as well. Best Wishes :)

We had a 70's feature wall fireplace roughly 26' a real monstrosity and had it knocked out and the wall plastered by a local builder - cost is roughly £150. Best money spent - ever.
