Double Oven

Ok, I have been avoiding posting about this but we have finally got enough to have the kitchen done.

It is not going to be a quick project because we are knocking through to the dining room, etc.

Anyway, just getting down to the nitty gritty and looking for appliances currently.

I would like a double oven (was thinking of steam initially but thought better of it). I have up to £900 to spend on a built in double oven around the 100 litres capacity. I am looking at a Smeg. However I have seen some reviews that leave a lot to be desired. Can anyone recommend me one?

Whatever you do steer clear of Smeg. They are crap. There is no nice way of putting it. You wont go too wrong with a Neff, Siemens or Bosch double oven.

I would always recommend a combi microwave and a single oven over a double oven, but the cost will be a bit more than a double oven but then you may very likely to getting a built in microwave so the costs near about come to the same sort of figure.

TittyMcFartyFlaps · 20/04/2014 18:14

Smeg are crap would never get one again ( although I have a Smeg dishwasher not oven)

wonkylegs · 21/04/2014 09:07

Noooooo to smeg. They seem to spend all the build cost on looks & none on quality.
I would highly recommend Neff for ovens. When we moved in this house had a neff double oven and it was fab, I felt guilty getting rid of it but I wanted 2 neff single ovens for capacity which again are fab (especially the slide & hide door)

Ok, will have a nosey at the Neff/Bosch then. I really don't want to waste money on the wrong appliance because I won't be able to rectify it.

I've just got a Neff oven and really love it. A friend has one and recommended it as hers is 10yrs old and never had any problems. Also heard good things about Siemens although even more pricey!

SpringItOn · 21/04/2014 11:41

I hated my smeg range from the day I got it. Billowed steam on opening and left a pool of condensation at the floor when cooking for long periods, roasts etc. it looked fantastic but I would never buy smeg again. We are currently looking for a new one for reasons I won't go into on hear as I may put the fear of god in you all Grin

truelymadlysleepy · 21/04/2014 12:13

I've got 2 Siemens single ovens, side by side under an induction hob. It has the feel of a Range but is much more practical.
I'm doing the same in my next kitchen.

iggymama · 21/04/2014 13:08

Spring! You have to tell us...please?

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/04/2014 15:20

Ever so slight over budget, but I cook a lot and my Die Dietrich is the total dogs nads and will have again and again

SpringItOn · 21/04/2014 22:32

Blush Well, here goes, I thought one of the cats had brought a rat in and it had managed to escape. Turns out, rat had eaten through from the adjoining outhouse and decided to make the rear of the Smeg range into it's nest. Shock
Lovely. I have had the most stressful week and have got through more bleach than Kim n Aggie. The smell was sooo bad when we eventually unscrewed the back of the range, I threw up.

We couldn't use it again. Scrapped it.

Going to have to name change again Only recently changed or would not have posted!

MillyMollyMama · 22/04/2014 00:07

That is one hell of a story Spring!

I always advocate looking at the user ratings on a web site such as Appliances Online - AO. These at least give you a reasonable shortlist. I have two ovens and a combi microwave. I can cook for Christmas and big gatherings easily. I would look at Bosch and Die Dietrich if you can afford it! I currently have Kupersbusch and they are very well made, solid, ovens.

iggymama · 22/04/2014 00:58

Yuck, did you roasted rats rotting in your range?

kmdesign · 22/04/2014 07:59

With appliances I woould generally recommend sticking with Bosch, Neff, Siemens or Miele.

De Dietrich make good products but their after sales is awful. Its broadly the same story with AEG/Electrolux/Zanussi. Kuppersbusch is great too but their UK distributor seems to go in and out of administration - not good for after sales support.

I dont really rate any of the other appliance brands out there.

In comparison BSH or Miele have been around years, offer well made products with good after sales backup.

Roussette · 22/04/2014 08:11

I'm on my second Neff oven and only got rid of first because we had our kitchen done. They are solid and reliable if a bit boring basically they do what it says on the tin.

Roussette · 22/04/2014 08:11

(meant to say someone bought the kitchen units and wanted the oven too or I would have hung on to it)

SpringItOn · 22/04/2014 19:33

Didn't roast them no, they were living in the housing, in the back of it where all the wires etc are. I wanted to cry Sad

Reese123 · 22/04/2014 20:14

OMG, it wasn't a super rat was it?

SpringItOn · 22/04/2014 20:23

Stop it! Grin. I'm still having nightmares about rats crawling about in my bed.

silverfingersandtoes · 22/04/2014 21:10

The door fell off my smeg oven Shock
It was the drop-down type. One day it dropped down and off, when I was half way through cooking the Sunday roast.

SpringItOn · 22/04/2014 21:15

^^^ That will have been the rats eating the hinges Wink

silverfingersandtoes · 23/04/2014 09:08

Springiton Grin

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 23/04/2014 20:11

I have a new kitchen and it's worth bearing in mind that many double ovens are not pyrolitic (self cleaning) and often don't have the features that single ovens do. I got the impression when choosing new appliances that the big brands would like us to buy a single oven, combi/microwave and a warming drawer combination instead of a double oven. I agree with other posts about Smeg. I would definately recommend a pyro oven.
