New build, would you?

Just wondering what peoples experiences are with larger new builds as I have owned a new build flat in the past but not a house. The one company we really like the look of at the moment is Bovis homes if that makes a difference.

We have a 4/5 bed, 3 bath 2700sq ft detached house from Taylor Wimpey and love it. Have been here 5 years. DH and I have an interest in property and have viewed a few Bovis developments, their spec and finish is very good, better than Taylor Wimpey. However we got a much larger house for the same money as a Bovis one, just didn't get all the bells and whistles which suited us as we could do our own thing.
The Bovis ones we have seen included fitted wardrobes, landscaped gardens, fancy lights, feature fire, however choice was limited and we didn't want to be paying for these options (which indirectly you are) for the next 20 years on a mortgage.
It really depends what you want. I would say Bovis are one of the better large developers.

Thanks for the reply, I have always bought properties with 'p', and have bought them with my financial/ investment head on (apart from as a FTB with the new build flat) so I am finding it hard to see it as a relaxed family home option (as I don't want to keep moving now I have Ds) and so want to continue doing the investments alongside, rather than live I them!!

my mum has just bought a bovis home..I can't say I'm that impressed with the finish etc but I did wangle a big discount and got them to pay her stamp duty .

I live in a hew build and I do love it although I know I wont really make any money on it.

Its really low maintenance and low bills too.

New builds have almost no gardens or plots thats the down side.

My new build has a lovely sized garden (which is why we chose it ) and this is what we look out on. I think finish is purely down to the site manager, our neighbours finish is shocking, but the site manager changed (sacked) after theirs and before ours. The new site manager was brilliant and even let us have access for people to come in and do stuff before we had completed.

Wow I think I'll have your house haveto!! It looks amazing!! I suppose there is always going to be different views as like op have said it depends on the site manager! I will make sure I check out the quality on site first!

Dec we were very very lucky to get this house and we waited a year for it. It was not my dream house, as I love Georgian houses, however to get one this size would be upwards of 700k in my area. I have however come to love it. I have three windows in my lounge and they all look out onto tree's, not many new builds can boast that. I also have lovely neighbours

We got a new build of the plan, nice to pick all the tiles/cupboards/carpets and additional extras that we wanted to have which meant it is exactly what we wanted. We even paid to have the internal walks white instead of cream which went with more of our stuff!
I would do new build again if we needed/wanted to move

That really does sound lovely! I shall have to keep an eye out for a really good plot, it's so hard to decided what to do for the best, as I'm someone who normally changes eveything all the time, but I know a new build would be a longer term decision.

No but purely because my DH has a building company and what I have heard from some of the boys about the quality on a lot of sites has put me off.

If I was on my own or had very young children I might. Much less hassle I would imagine.

SnowBells this is our 3rd off plan new build, no disappointment yet. Top tip.... get up their backsides and stay there, don't let anything slip, make it known you are watching their every move and you won't accept anything but the best.

We have a new build which wasn't what I really wanted ....but we wanted an easy sale as dd was on way and we needed a roof.

However I love it....a small development of just 5 houses huge garden and loads of room between properties....

I used to think all new builds were like boxes with handkerchief gardens but no....some nice ones out there....

We've got a new build after looking for anything BUT a new build. Ours was a small development (12 houses) by a small local building company. I'd recommend buying the earlier houses. I'm #5 and the finish in mine is great. Think they borrowed from the other houses though when stuff broke I.e. #12 and #11 have had all sorts of problems.

The best thing about buying from a small business is they put in expensive fixtures and fittings which you won't get in bigger schemes. ours is the quality of a Cala home but the price of a Wimpey home.
