French drain - bad idea to cover with perforated metal strip?

Just that really. I'm about to have the broken crazy paving n my tiny front garden removed, and replaced with something smarter. One of the quotes includes covering the french drain, next to the house, with some sort of perforated metal strip, which would be higher than the air brick in the wall, but the same level as the new tiling. Currently, the french drain is a receptacle for any rubbish or leaves that blows around, and it's a pain to clear it out.

If anybody has any advice, I'd be most grateful.
