Anyone know anything about Ashtead? We are looking at a possible move to there. I need to know about trains to London bridge. Are they packed? Can you get back from London Kate at night? Schools - I have a girl and boy. Currently in primary but secondary in sight.
Community - what's the vibe like? Any places to eat/drink?

Ashtead is near to us, very lovely area. Two sides to it though, the really large expensive houses, aren't so close to the train station, the area near the train station has a mix of houses, most really lovely. Nice playgrounds as well.

Primary schools are quite full though. You may be placed in a school more distant, but you will be given a taxi. My son's classmate taxis in from Ashtead.

High schools, not sure. probably a bit far from Ashcombe which is in Dorking. Some good Private Schools.

The trains from London are great, but most from Victoria and Waterloo. London Bridge will be more difficult.

Cost wise for everything, you will suffer from the 'inside the M25' mentality when comparing prices to Leatherhead, which is just the other side of the M25.

I live there. It's lovely. Trains go to and from Waterloo and Victoria. It is a nightmare trying to get a taxi from ashtead. Don't know about schools. Nice little village shops!

We viewed a house in Ashstead this evening. We are thinking of making an offer. Its less than a mile from Therfield school. They have good GCSE results but mixed opinions on here. Does anyone have an up too date view? The house is perfect otherwise.

I used to live there and my in laws still do. Not much idea about schools I'm afraid as it wasn't of much interest to me when I was there. Lots of very naice, expensive private schools. Therfield is the local secondary school but it is quite a walk.
The playground is fab, as is the common and ashtead park.
There are quite a few nice restaurants including my favourite indian ever and a nice italian and a lovely Chinese. Leather head although dead in the day used to have a lovely feel on a summers evening with all the restaurants opening up the fronts. There are some lovely little shops both in the lower village and high street. Guildford is not far by train and is lovely for shopping and has a fab leisure centre with swimming, bowling and ice skating.
Trains are brilliant and run to Waterloo or Victoria, the last train back from there is around midnight so good if you want to go and see a show. I think there are some direct trains at commute times to London Bridge but at other times you may need to change at Epsom or Sutton and it will take a bit longer.
Will be back if I think of anything else. I loved it there and was there for 7 years, the only downside was we couldn't afford a house so had to move back to my native suffolk. Send me message if you want info on particular road your moving to or anything like that.

Try the schools section on MN. You might find more up to date info. I don't know anything about that school, but TBH most of the schools around here are very good, and oversubscribed.

What is the mixed opinion based on? Because what may be important to them may not be important to you.

I like Ashtead but have heard mixed reviews about Therfield. Ashcombe seems to be highly thought of.
