running toilet

Came home late to noise. Seems the toilet is running constantly, the cistern is empty and won't flush. I am on a water meter!. I think I need to lift the cistern lid and simply fiddle with the mechanism but I can't get the lid off because the chain (a dual button for big and small flush) is stopping me. Any ideas?

You need Piglet John for this!

Google solutions though too. You may get an answer.

You need a new ball cock.

Sorry you have been lumbered with one of those cisterns with buttons on the top.

Look for a screw in the socket where the buttons are.

Try pushing down the big button and pulling out the little button, then pull out the big one, there may be a plastic screw underneath. In some cases the button socket unscrews.

Next time, I expect you will look for a less annoying cistern.
