When you say forever house...

Do people mean they actually see themselves living there forever or just a long time?

I mean I love my house and can see us living here for a good 12+ years but forever? I see it more as a great family house.
But when it's just me dh and a couple of dogs we will probably go for something different.
when dcs have left/ got their own houses I don't think we would want to rattle round in/maintain this. We have 4 double bed and teen den- these are rooms that are lovely to have now but wouldn't get much use then.

What are your thoughts?

We've been talking about hopefully finding a "forever house" but I've been wondering about this too...the thing is that DH and I live nowhere near either set of parents, his are 200 miles in one direction and mine are 300 in another, so we stay over when we visit. We think it's fairly likely that some of our kids won't live near us and we'd like to have room for them to stay with us when they visit (which will be REALLY OFTEN, right?!!! Better had be!)
However, having a really large house does seem a tad ridiculous with only two old folks rattling around in it.

I think a forever house is a dream home one that will be for ever. That said ours will be our forever house despite the fact in reality it is a two bedroom terraced starter home because we will never afford anything else.

We say we are in our forever house, but as you say when the children grow up and leave we will be rattling round a 4 bed with a teenage den!

So for now, what we mean is, is meets all our needs now and until the children grow up and leave home.

I think a forever house is the family house. I might change my mind, but when my kids have left, finances permitting, I can't see myself wanting to downsize. I will just want to enjoy the space! I want to have a place for the kids to stay when they visit.

I think a forever house is the family home as well. The one you live in for a number of years before you have to downsize.

I hope we can live in our current house until the DC are 30ish, so they will have their 'family home' to come back to as often as they like, until they've got houses and families of their own.

We have a "forever home" that we currently rent out as it doesn't suit our needs right now. But we can't imagine selling it (we lived there for 10 years, the years in which our dc were born).

Our current house is nice enough - an easy to clean/heat/maintain newbuild with 4 beds and in a nice street. But it's a bit soulless (despite pictures/knickknacks/books etc). Once our children are grown up I can see dh and I selling up and retreating to the remote house we love!

I have 4 dc so our house won't be a forever home because when they all hopefully move out we won't need a large house. I'd rather a small cottage/bungalow with space for chickens, goats etc.

Our "forever" means until we win the lottery Grin or retire - we love our house, it has its faults but it works for us. If I won loads on the lottery, I would probably choose not to live on a modern estate backing onto a motorway, and we know we pay a premium for living in the South-East, so once the kids have upped and gone, we would probably move elsewhere in the country to a "nice" house with just enough room for us and 1 or 2 spare bedrooms for when the kids/grandkids come to stay.

DH and I are discussing atm whether to aim for our Forever Home on this next move (which would necessitate buying a fixer upper with room to extend) or an interim house, and by FH we mean one we'd live in at least until retirement. I'd prefer the Forever Home but DH is fed up of the DIY we're doing on our current home so loathed to take on a fixer upper.

interesting replies- some people think forever home means exactly that others until a major event happens- dcs leaving/retirement /finanacial gain etc

I've seen it so many times on hear, but never heard anyone say it in RL!

By forever home I mean 'I can't imagine going through the hell of moving again'.

Ours is a forever home because we bought the land, designed the house, managed the build and did a lot of the work ourselves to save money, so we've put a lot into it.

I can't imagine living anywhere else, probably because after 12 years here I still can't bear the thought of going through that again. And it isn't even completely finished yet. We ran out of money, time and energy Sad. Fortunately, we've been here so long we barely notice the bits that still need doing.

I would find it very depressing to think of staying in the same house 'forever'. I need variety in life! Longest I've ever lived in one place was 8 years as a teenager.

I would not talk the house we are currently buying a forever house but it the house which we bought as we think it will be suitable for our future needs, eg children.
