Inspiration needed - open plan living

We've just had an offer accepted on a flat (hurray!) and it has a huge open plan kitchen and reception. There's enough space for a distinct living, dining and kitchen area.

I've bought a few interior magazines for inspiration but can't find much to help with open plan living. I'm wondering how we can give each part it's own feel (iyswim).

Any tips or links gratefully received!

I have struggled with this in a flat we own. I think it is best to use a rug for the lounge area and obviously the fabrics used in the seating will be softer giving the lounge area a more relaxed look. You can always use table lamps to give atmosphere to this area. The dining area could be more functional but I think it is nice to have a beautifully designed table and chairs. Perhaps an overhead light or a big arc standard lamp.

We do have the same fabric blinds throughout, but you could look at using blinds and sheer curtains to give different effects in each area. Using a wall divider type display shelf also helps to break up large areas. I would look at Houzz, the American website as open plan living is quite common there and I am sure you will find loads of ideas.

Is there any kind of break between kitchen and dining area? Eg flooring or cupboards that form a natural barrier?

How much do you want to separate them out? Do you want to be able to see across the entire space or do you want a physical block?

Bookshelves going across the room between dining and loung are conform a kind of wall although you can still see through them. Or you can arrange sofas etc into an inward looking circle. Do you want to have a visual focal point? One for each are or for the entire room?

I think that the overhead lighting plays a role. Our table sits under the light between our kitchen and living area.

There is no need to seperate the functions. If its a really big space soft furnishings will reduce echos. Just enjoy the space. It's nice to know what everybody is up to.

There are no natural separations to the room at the moment - same flooring throughout. There are two fireplaces which could be features in the living and dining areas.

I don't think I would like a real block, I have a young DD so I think it'll be nice for her to run around the entire space. But the shelving is a good idea. In the short term, we will probably use sofas until our finances recover enough to buy more furniture!
