Why can't I close the damper plate on Victorian fireplace? Help!

Just that really. We've not lived here that long and I'm ready to close the damper plate until it gets cold and polish the fire up with the black stuff! It just doesn't seem to close fully, half way really. Am I missing something? Thanks :)

It is just very old, bent and sticks I expect. Can u find out what is stopping it closing? You could replace it with a newer one that does work!

I suspect it hasn't been closed for ages and maybe it's a build up of "stuff". I'm awaiting a call from someone to install cowls so am hoping he can sort it.
