Newark on Trent

Hi there. Can anyone advise me if newark is a nice area to live, eg good shops restaurants, low crime etc ? Any suggestions of lovely areas would be greatly appreciated, thanks :-)

It is lovely! It is my new favourite place (have just discovered it). I'm about 30 miles away but go there for shopping - naice Waitrose, fantastic wine shop, great cafes. It has to be the friendliest place in Britain.

There are plenty of small independent shops and a market by the town hall, train station, lovely ruined castle, it's nice. Also close to Lincolnshire. And it has a fabulous antiques fair just outside the town.

Newark is lovely. When we lived in Derbyshire it was our nearest Waitrose so regular trips were in order!

does no one thinks that it's boring? is there something to do apart from going to waitrose ? it looks like there are no parks.

It does have a huge and famous fair but it's only a few times a year.

I live there

It can be a little boring, I don't have children or any spare money so I don't have much to do.

There are lovely play parks if you know where to find them, they're dotted around the more residential parts. The town centre isn't bad, there's nothing very exotic but there's a lot of local businesses.

Oh and the people are lovely

Oh yeah I forgot the castle! I've spent many a summer in the castle grounds

Chubby, so what would there be to do (without dc) if there was some spare cash ? I mean proper parks for walking rather than playgrounds.

Any streets with those small shops to look at on google?

I want to visit soon for the fair but wanted to stay overnight and look at the area.

The park by the library is lovely, all grassy and flowery with a big monument in the middle and some statues. I don't get to go there very often so I'm not 100% sure what they're about but they're nice to look at I guess. There is afaik a museum by the river(on Mill Gate) that's free. If you've got a lot of energy there's the lane near me that goes on forever,(there's some horses down there and when the owners are around they let you stroke them). If you have a little bit of money there's a boat that takes up and down the river on a little tour, we have a civil war trail as well. I've never been on it but I might do it this summer, I always see the little plaques round town.

Going to see if I can think of anything else. I don't get out much!

Also I think you can get torus round the inside of the castle. You used to be able to, I even went down in the dungeons once. You can get married there these days(I am doing next year!) and a couple I know even had their ceremony in the actual dungeons.

We also have a massive cemetery with all the polish war graves, it's quite an emotional place, it's just a sea of small stone crosses.

There's Beaumond Cross which is a sort of park area next to London Road. In the summer it's always so colourful and the old fountain is still there.

There's a huge area for walking, and there's a little hidden part in the trees where they've put giant wooden mushrooms(I think it's meant to look like something from a fairy tale!). I'll see if I can find some pictures it's a very sweet area.

After a quick google I see lots of things have changed since I last enjoyed Newark although google maps doesn't seem to show the bridge at sconce hills so you can actually get into the middle, or the mushrooms!

They're not crosses in the cemetery either, they're small gravestones. Oops

For street view I would recommend the market square, with the little streets that branch off it, and Mill Gate/Castlegate heading towards northgate.

Newark is my favourite place! DP used to live there and I would visit often. Very easy to get around, easy to get to Leeds, London, Nottingham etc.

Favourite restaurant is the Greek place near to Corn Exchange.

Greek Steakhouse! I've never been but my friend used to be a floor manager there.

Corn Exchange has closed now because the roof caved in, luckily during the day when no one was there it was definitely the better of the two nightclubs!
