just put foot thru bathroom floor...help

Thought it might be nice to go for a relaxing soak.. wrong!! have put my foot though floor and have pulled back linyl to have a look and woodchip floorboards are soaking wet and gone to mush...

Are you ok ?! ( images of Tom Hanks in the money pit ) sounds a bit of a nightmare - empty the bath if it's full !! Lock the door from the outside if you can to keep people and especially little ones out !

You need to see the extent of the problem to decide how to tackle it. I know you really want to run away screaming but that wont help anyone.

Do you have another adult in the house who can help too?

If you are on your own there are still things you can tackle.

If there are Dcs in the house make sure they are safely away from the bathroom first though. Pull up the vinyl to see how much of the floor is wet and unsafe. Then try to find where the water is coming from.Usually it is a slowly dripping connection to tap or shower but can be anywhere in the bathroom.

Once you find the source see if you can stop the drip/leak with the stoptap . This will turn off the water to the whole house so make sure you have enough for immediate needs.Fill kettle and 2 litre bottles for now first.

You next step depends on what you find when the water is switched off and the vinyl removed.

get out your insurance docs and see if you have cover - maybe they will send someone out to help
also do you pay for other cover eg pipes and heating?
keep the lino you pull up in case you make an insurance claim

Oh dear, agree with trying to find the source of the leak. We had to have our entire kitchen floor replaced due to a long term slow leak. We had 2 joists replaced and another couple reinforced as well as some ventilation grids under the kitchen work tops to help dry out the under floor space.

thanks, have rang a mate who has someone who works for him who is coming to have a look... cant understand home insurance docs... confused!! should I ring them or see what carpenter says ?

i would phone and ask before you pay anyone as the insurance might still cover it. ours excludes that but it was included on my old policy. no harm asking.
