Paint colours to match dark red tiles?

Really need some inspiration.

House is tiny Victorian terrace with fireplace in living room with built in book shelves either side of chimney breast. Was hideous faux marble monstrosity over original fireplace. We managed to prise that off and found original dark red/burgundy coloured tiles underneath.

I've been thinking about repainting the walls and possibly choosing a second different colour for the back of the bookshelves, but not sure what will go.

We have a very dark wooden floor, a beige sofa which we cannot afford to replace just to fit a new paint colour, and an armchair and rug in the same deep red as the fireplace tiles. Think grey would look horrible behind beige sofa, so probably have to rule that out. Help please!

would the same dark red of the tiles work well behind your shelves ( or clash with what's on the shelves ?!?! ) as sofas are usually the biggest thing in the room it's sometimes a good idea for the sofa to be the same colour as the wall behind it - so it blends away a bit ?! this is a good idea in smaller spaces !

Red behind the books would be good in a bigger room, but ours is tiny so probably a bit much.

What colour is it at the moment? Red is a hard colour to match really.... I would be inclined to go with white especially if it's a small room. And maybe if you want two colours, the other one being something like gentle fawn by dulux.

And maybe get some red/burgandy accessories to tie in with tiles?

Wallpaper? Woods by cole and son in the beige version. If only one wall not too expensive. Cheaper versions are available!

Red is notoriously hard to match, and even if you manage it, too much can end up looking like a brothel

I'd go for something neutral especially if you've got a beige sofa. I've got same kind of colours/interiors as you and have just pained walls "soft stone" - very warm and sets off the red beautifully......if I do say so myself!!

Walls are currently dulux soft stone. Looks nice but wanted to be a bit more adventurous. Think you're probably all right: red is impossible to match!

I really love the cole and son wallpaper. Our walls would need replastering first though, which would cut into the new bathroom budget.

I had this problem in my kitchen - crimson tiles everywhere. It is a suprisingly hard colour to match if you don't want the red to scream. In the end I went with a cool pale greigey putty colour - think it was Homebase Biscuit or something. It toned but also helped to cool down the red a bit. Would go well with beige sofa, too.
