If you have a terraced house with an extension...

Hi everyone, we are thinking of extending our kitchen but are stuck for ideas. Our house is a Victorian/Edwardian terrace. To give an idea of layour, we have a narrow hall and a double reception room (which has been opened up) and the kitchen comes directly off the back of the double reception room. The kitchen is about 3.3m x 3.3m and we have a side return.

I think this makes it harder, as if we had a long hall with the kitchen having its own door rather than coming off the reception room, we could dedicate the back reception to being a study or playroom. However, you have to walk through the back of the reception room to get to the kitchen so it's a bit of a 'walk through' room. We don't want to just make a nice big kitchen and then have a dead space in the middle as this is just a waste of space. Anyone got any good ideas for how to use this space, which is in danger of just being a corridor with a desk/piano stuck in it or something!

Open up the kitchen into the dining room.

Sorry meant to say more. Can you not take out the door between kitchen and back of reception room, make the gap bigger so it flows into the back room.

We thought of doing this in our Edwardian terrace but moved in the end!

Have thought of it, but then you end up with a massive open plan room. We really would have liked it it be a playroom, but don't really want to have to walk through playroom to get to kitchen. What we really need is a utility room. I am thinking ahead 5 years to when the kids are grown up and wondering where on earth their coats, shoes, trainers, ballet kit, muddy wellies and everything are going to go!

I would say make it a dining room and add doors back to your lounge so you can close that if you want to.

Put large doors down the middle of the through lounge so that front half is a separate room and have back half open plan to the kitchen

Make back part of living room narrower so that you can have a hallway going all the way to the kitchen

Move the stairs so you can have a longer hallway

Put kitchen in back part of living room and have play room off that (where kitchen used to be)

Keep current layout and have a really large extension so you don't mind the wasted space
