homeq.co.uk/47/how-to-descale-a-shower-head

"remove the head and leave it submerged in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water overnight. This will completely remove all lime scale."? Really?

Watching with interest!

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 21/02/2014 22:09

Yup.

husband regularly leaves in a pot of cheapest vinegar. Reuse vinegar.

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 21/02/2014 22:09

Does kettle too.

ShoeJunkie · 21/02/2014 22:10

Yep, I regularly descale the kettle with white vinegar.

Lostmumof31974 · 21/02/2014 22:11

Doesn't it smell for ages after and make brew smell wrong too?

mousmous · 21/02/2014 22:11

yes.
works best with warm water.
works for descaling a kettle and getting rid of lime scale in the loo, too.
brilliant stuff.
and cheap.
and safe around dc.

mousmous · 21/02/2014 22:11

the smell doesn't linger. not more than bleach anyway.

ShoeJunkie · 21/02/2014 22:12

You need to rinse/boil a couple of kettle-fulls of water and then it's fine.

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2014 22:15

Yes it works, for both showers & kettles. I keep a stock of white vinegar for just this purpose. It's great for removing limescale on taps and shower screens too.

I always boil the kettle a couple of times after descaling and throw the water away.

saraht1973 · 21/02/2014 22:18

Wow. Thanks ladies (and perhaps gents)... I'm on it!

I'm guessing that I could do the ends of taps in this way too?

Vinegar won't damage the surface (?chrome I think)?

steppemum · 21/02/2014 22:20

Did it recently with our shower head which I have tried hard to clean in several other ways. Used white vinegar with a bit of water. It came out spotless and working beautifully
I left it in for a long time - all day I think

StressheadMcGee · 21/02/2014 22:23

Definitely works, I frequently soak the shower head (I'm a northerner, can't stand the scuzzy hard water down here)

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 21/02/2014 22:35

We leave it overnight.

Forago · 21/02/2014 22:38

Itdoes your kettle too

MichaelFinnigan · 21/02/2014 22:40

So whee do you buy vinegar? Our supermarket has just got a small bottle of malt, for chips

Forago · 21/02/2014 22:45

Tesco, larger bottle, has to be white vinegar. I use about half to descale the kettle. With a bit of water.

Astounds me every time how it makes the kettle like new!

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 21/02/2014 22:46

We use malt if it's cheap. Works fine.

OnePlanOnHouzz · 22/02/2014 17:07

why, after reading all that, do I now have an urge for chips ?!?!
