Removal of gas meter when no gas supplier

We are having a nightmare at the moment trying to move a gas meter. We had a water leak into our neighbours flat, unfortunately the tap/pipe can't be fixed until we have removed the meter. We don't have a gas supplier. It has been such a long time since there was gas that there is no record of a gas supplier. Has anyone had this before? How did you get rid of it? I have spoken to so many people who send me somewhere else and I am sick if it!

The gas distribution company is probably your best starting point. It depends on where you live. I think it will either be SGN (covering scotland and some of southern England) or try the national grid www2.nationalgrid.com/UK/Services/Gas-distribution-connections/Alterations/

The meter reference point should be on the meter.

I thought the meter was owned by Transco?
Even if not, everything on the supply side is.

Suggest you ask them for help and info.

I don't think the Meterpoint will be on the meter.

It doesn't usually matter, if the meter is at your address. Occasionally in some flats the meters are in a single room or cabin and it is very important they are individually marked, but flat number should do.

Your address and postcode should be enough.

If you divulge your outer postcode (the first three or four characters, e.g. SW1 or EH10) it will be easy to find your network.

Transco was merged years ago into National Grid, which then dropped the Transco part of the name. They were then forced by the government to divest some regions. Scotia Gas Networks (owned 50% by the Nova Scotia Teachers Pension Fund, and 50% by SSE) bought quite a lot in the areas where they are most active, and there were some (I think smaller) other investors.

Thank you for the info. In the end a local plumber removed it (took ten minutes). It had a British gas sticker so am now going through the pain of asking them to pick it up when I am not a customer!
