Loft ladder advice please

I have a loft hatch but no ladder. Due to the proximity of the loft hatch to the top banister, there's a potential drop over the banister straight to the ground floor (banister overlooking the bottom step). So I want a ladder with hand rails or similar. Moving the hatch within the hall may not help due to the layout.

Any advice on what to buy and who to fit it? I see there are companies who do both.

I got one from screw fix - it's wooden with a sturdy handrail . Was a handyman job ! Took an afternnon.

the wooden ones feel sturdier and more secure than the aluminium ones, but they are heavier. Try to operate a demonstration one before you choose.

If you have taller ceilings than most modern houses (about 8'6") you may need an extra long one (my ceiling are 3m so I do)

I have an aluminium one with a long handrail along the stairs side.

Thanks everyone, PigletJohn that's really useful to know.
