Revarnishing an old pine table?

Have an old dining room set that I want to revamp as it's that old fashioned orangy pine. I'm painting the chairs with chalk paint (and very nice they look too!) but want the table top to be varnished.

No idea where to start though? anyone done it? Should I restain it or should I just sand it back and use a clear varnish. Is there any particular products I should use. I've been googling but to be honest it's as clear as mud!

I would use nitromors and wire wool to remove the varnish. Then sand it. Then I would use several coats of Danish oil or worktop oil, rather than varnish.
