Complete house clean?

We're moving house in a month's time and wondering about getting a firm in to give the house we are leaving a complete clean. It's a biggish four bedroom Edwardian semi. Anyone done the same? how much did you pay? Was it worth it?!

Why would you spend his money on a house you've already sold (assuming you're not renting)

There are bits of it that haven't been properly cleaned (windows,skirting boards etc) for years,and have to say the kitchen especially needs a good going over. For various reasons, it's not going to be possible for us to do it,and I feel guilty at the idea of our buyers having to cope with the mess! they have a new baby.

That is so thoughtful of you! I suppose it would depend on where you live. Cleaners in my area (Cheshire) charge around £10/15 per hour and to do it all top to bottom including windows I would guess it would take around 5/6 hours. Good luck!

I would save your money!

Also, when will you get it done? Normally the buyers move in as soon as you leave and if you do it before moving day you'd still have mess from the move.

We had a nightmare buyer who sent a carpet cleaner in when we were still packing up (didn't ask, poor carpet guy just turned up not realising what they'd done). Really got in the way of the movers. Also, the carpets were still wet when her removal crew moved her in - served her right

The people that we bought our house from did this, and we really appreciated it . We've also done a complete clean (ourselves) of any previous house we've left.

Definitely do it OP, what goes around, comes around .

Its not expected but a very nice thing to do in my experience, a lot of people I know have talked about the disappointment of arriving to move in to their new home and find its a pig sty.

We recently got an end of tenancy quote including down stairs carpet cleaned (large area) and it was £200 (Berkshire) but I think even a three hr blitz by a local company should only be £60 or so, doesn't need to be perfect but saves you the bother and is really nice for the new owners.

Agree with the majority... Of course you don't have to, and they'll have a bit of dust and mess after the unpacking anyway, but I know it would make my heart sing to move into a house that had been freshly cleaned. It says a lot about how you feel about the house, and how they might expect to feel about it.

Do it if you can. Especially if you have any links with area (we bump into the people we sold to occasionally and they have commented more than once that it was lovely and clean). It doesn't need to be forensically clean iykwim. More importantly is to leave all the instructions somewhere obvious, list of bin days etc. Some of it is just about being nice, some if it is if your buyer thinks kindly of you the are less likely to come after you about the inevitable hiccups ( boiler breaking down, your removers taking something that should have been left), it is also a small world.

My parents moved recently and honestly the house was spotless. Not a sign of dust/dirt/grime. Oven and cooker were sparkling. All of the cupboards is OCD and loves to clean but even she found it difficult to find anything to clean! It made it so much easier for them to move straight in.
I would never have thought about cleaning a house before moving out but now I think I would as it just spreads good karma and is just a nice thing to do!

Thanks for these replies,think will def go ahead. And we are moving only about ten minutes walk away,so will prob bump into our buyers at some stage! Good idea to leave list of info about bin days etc. too.

I disagree completely! Its definitely expected to leave a house thoroughly clean, am gobsmacked people think its acceptable not to??!! Am not saying you have to pay someone to do it of course!!!

But if you don't have time yourself, the vast majority of cleaning companies, certainly here, offer one - off cleans - spring clean / end of tenancy / moving day clean. Think its £70 upwards depending on how long you expect it to take.
