Kitchen walls - what do you have?

I'm ripping out the old falling-to-pieces kitchen in the house I've just bought which includes removing all of the awful wall and floor tiles. The room will be completely replastered before the new kitchen goes in. We're going for a white Ikea kitchen with oak coloured worktops. I'm totally new to all of this and I need to know what to put on the kitchen walls between the base and high units. Can I just use kitchen paint with a glass splashback behind the gas hob? Do I need to use glass the whole way round? I really don't want to use tiles again.... Help!

My kitchen planner (it's being fitted next month, eek!) had advised us to go for a really good washable paint and see. He reckons 80% of his customers are fine with this, even behind the hob - the rest go back for some sort of splashback. Seems sensible to me.

Like you, I didn't want tiles.

I went for upstands in same material and colour as the worksurfaces, and used Dulux Kitchen washable paint.

So far so good.

Same here, up stands, no tiles and scrubbable paint (is that even a word?!)

Has worked fine, even with spatters of sauce from behind the hob, it washes off

Was going to have a glass splash back but never got round to it...

Thanks everyone, I think that I'll start off with 'scrubable' paint then. MrsHR any recommendations? I do like some of the dulux colours wetaugust so good to hear that it seems to be doing the job.

Now, to splashback or not to splashback....and which colour

Why not wait and see if you need it? Which is what i tried in a very garbled fashion to articulate up there :)

I'm just not that 'into' tiles and I'd like to have the option of changing the colour of the kitchen easily. Of course I may change my mind and tile after the kitchen is in place But we have two layers of tiling to strip back in the meantime...

Oh ok I am seeing a lot of glass splash backs being removed atm and a big return to tiles but understand your point!

Yes, I agree, sling the tiles. Whatever is said there are always problem stains which you can't remove from the grouting. I've recently had a new kitchen with no tiles at all and am really pleased with it. DH and I do lots of cooking and I'm a very messy worker so decided to have a glass splashback behind the stove. Grease marks can be hard to get off the wall. I wanted a bright colour but my kitchen planner steered me towards a duller colour as he favoured a German manufacturer over a British one!! - said they're always more reliable with the measurements.
It's a blue/grey.

PS. Stainless steel also looks good as a splash back.

It's very difficult to keep up with the 'trends' Noddy This is my first house and it requires major renovation so I'm glad for all the guidance I can get!

Who May I ask where you got your splashback from?

We had the kitchen fitted by a company called Europlan in Bournemouth. I just tried to find the invoice but can't put my finger on it at the mo. I don't think it would name the supplier of the glass though.

We've got quartz up-stands to match the worktop, white painted Walls and a glass splashback behind the hob.
We just got the glass from a local glazing company.
It's very smart and looks a lot less cluttered than the tiles did.

Glass has been a trend for the last 12 or so years I think the patterned tiles have made people change back! I threw away a stunning glass splash back a few months ago a real waste it was an amber colour with bubbles in it such a waste!

I think the paint we used was something like dulux endurance, was a few years though so probably a previous incarnation, hth x
