Kitchen Diner

What would you say is a good size for a kitchen diner? What would your minimum size be?

Trying to get my head around the size we need for an extension and I just cannot visualise it.

how big is your family - ie how big do you need your table to be ?!
if you have a 2100mm long x 900mm wide table (6-8 seats) you would need approx. 800mm chair clearance all around it. so floor space of approx. 3700mm x 2500mm

if you wanted a round table, again allow approx. 800mm
chair space .
if you only occasionally have that many then you could have a flexible size table that extends and the gaps around could be a bit less .

as for kitchens - depends on how versatile you are - some people can happily cope with a very small kitchen - while others prefer lots of cupboards and worktops and island and pantry's and a separate laundry and utility ?!

generic design software for architects throws up a kitchen at 3mx 4.5m and a dining room at 4.5m x 4.5m as a starting point -

Hi I want to accommodate a table that seats 8 comfortably and a reasonable sized kitchen. I guess I shall just have to get out the squared paper and do some doodles.

I am interested to know though, how big are most people's kitchen diners.... I'm thinking 5x5m2 for a small one?

4.5x4.5m is standard for a dining room. That seems very large for a standard dining room. Are your kitchen and dining room figures perhaps reversed.

5m x 5m works okay for a kitchen-diner. Our kitchen extension is about that size though we use it more as a kitchen family room. However, it would work well as a kitchen-diner.

Thank you for that, I think that is what i will have to play with..i might be able to squeeze in a small utility for the washing machine and a loo so that will free up a bit. So nerve wracking!

probably American based sizes ! but that's what's generated when you request a dining room - I have a 6mx 4.5m kitchen and dining room - you can see it in my pro page if you want a look !

Ours is 3.5m by 9m. We have it arranged in sort of galley style (though not cramped) as you go in, with larder units and fridge on one side and cooker on the other (with sink on inner wall as you come in from hall). Then the end is the diner part with large table and doors out to the garden.

Helps tht we have separate utility.

Our kitchen/diner extension is 6mx5m and incorporates a utility and shower room.

Had a look at our old plans. Ours is 5.5m by 4.75m to be exact. It's not huge but works well for us. We have bifold doors onto the garden though which makes it feel bigger than it is.

Ours is 4 by 5.5m and is great, we have a large table in the diner part (comfortably and regularly seats 8). Our kitchen (u shaped with double sided units on the diner side) takes over slightly more than half of the space meaning there is quite a nice amount of floor space in the kitchen half as well as space for an armchair by the french doors into the garden on the other side. The diner section also has a large dresser at one side, doesn't feel squashed really. You can do a lot with clever planning and prioritising!
