Toddler threw away diamond earrings. Wondering if insurance will pay out.

I wonder if anyone might be able to tell me whether (pretty comprehensive) contents insurance which includes personal possession insurance will pay out as my beloved dd got hold of my earrings and some other jewellery (which I'm not claiming for) and put them in our bathroom bin which was then emptied by dh and TAKEN TO THE SKIP which he ever ever does (was doing a clear out). Seriously gutted and grateful for any advice or knowledge. Thanks.

Obviously the bathroom bin was emptied into a larger black bag with other rubbish in it. I'm concerned that they won't pay out because the earrings were accessible to my dd i.e. they were on the (low) window ledge where I'd stupidly left them. I could kick myself. We know she put them in the bin only because she pointed to it after we'd realised they were missing and asked her.

Think you might have to say they were lost? How much are they worth? I lost a diamond ring but only hot a proportion back as had no up to date valuation. Also it impacted upon my new policy as a claim had been made.

Thanks for the reply. They were last valued in 2009 at £2200. I was thinking about saying they were lost but am so loathe to lie. Then again it's not exactly a lie!

I would just say that they are lost, you think they've probably gone in the rubbish which has gone to the tip, have looked everywhere else and can't find them.

Just say they were lost, it is what insurance is for.

they paid out when I lost one ( not both !) but mine are listed separately on my insurance - you might find that if they are not specified separately - just all in with personal effects - that they might only pay out up to £1500. check what it says in your policy . it's worth adding expensive items as separate things, especially jewlery !! good luck !! :-)

Thanks everyone. I was as vague as I could be to the insurance company without actually telling a porky! They weren't interested in asking questions thankfully!
