Kitchen island or table?

I have decided that we will be having a run of units the length of the kitchen on one side but I am undecided on either an island or a (long and narrow) dining table opposite the units. Would be a squeeze to fit both in. There will be French doors at the end.

Does anyone have an island and wish they'd had a table instead or vica versa? Our kitchen opens up into a dining room but I am unsure whether to keep the dining table in there or make that area a playroom.

I just can't decide and need some help please!

Thankyou

Do you mean a breakfast bar? Grin

Islands do look very nice - but not good if you use the kitchen alot. The good thing with a table is number 1 that it is moveable and number 2 it's much easier to sit at as you can get your legs under it. If you have room for both though - that would be good!

No - there were no stools at it.

We have a small island and a big table in our kitchen, and use them for different things. The table is for eating at, doing homework, reading the paper etc. The island is for food prep, and for us works really well as it means all four of us can work in the kitchen at the same time. Our island is really just a floating kitchen cupboard (it houses most of our crockery, cutlery and kitchen implements) and can be picked up and moved if needed.

We are about to take down the wall in our kitchen and have a kitchen dining room instead, we will then have an even bigger table (the reason why we are taking down the wall) and will put in a larger island with bar stools. Plus maybe a sofa too (saw a kitchen with a sofa in it a few years back and thought it was fabulous).

Oooh have I unintentionally started a full on debate?!!! Thanks for all these further comments though! We have decided what to do.....drum roll....we are going to get a kitchen table that seats 4 but can extend to 8. Leave the island until the next house with massive kitchen dreams

Good choice!

I think sofas in kitchens can be lovely.

You definitely need washable loose covers though as they quickly get smelly.
