Woodburner: £1000 "lined" or £450 "unlined"??

Hi there. Love some help. Installing a woodburner stove and have had quote for £1030 with the chimney fully lined (recommended by the installer) or else "we can do it for £450 unlined but... (storing up problems for the future?)...."

Anyone come down on one versus t'other?

I think you have to have the chimney lined for a woodburner, but I guess it depends whether you've already had your's done, maybe because you already have a wood burner that you're replacing, or if you want it done as part of the process.

lined, definately i think its a legal requirement. also safer, as you wont get fumes leaking through brickwork

Definitely go for lined, without you can get condensate dripping g down your chimney which is much more expensive to fix in retrospect

As far as I can remember from when we had ours done a few years ago, the chimney definitely needs to be lined. I think ours cost something similar to the quote you've been given. Worth it though.

Woodburners make a lot of tar which sticks to the inside of the chimney.

I only know one person who had chimney fires, and they used to burn wood in a plain brick chimney. I don't think it sweeps out like dry soot. The chimney had to be demolished and rebuilt.

Also, have you considered a multifuel?

The chimney has to be lined. If it isn't already lined (probably not) - then you will need it.

make sure whoever does it is HETAS registered, or at least gets the work done by someone who is.

The chimney does not HAVE to be lined. However, if you are considering not lining it, you should get a chimney sweep to come and do a smoke test. They will tell you if it must be done or if you can get away without having one.

Without a chimney test, installing a stove without a lining can actually be dangerous.

Line it and make sure it's the most expensive liner you can get and that they insulate around it with something like vermiculite. Your house will benefit, as the chimney breast upstairs will retain heat and be like a little storage heater, and your chimney will need sweeping less as the gases will stay hot all the way up to the top of the chimney and deposit less garbage on your liner.
