Carpet- synthetic or wool?

Replacing stairs and new bedroom carpet need something hard wearing that won't show the dog hairs too much. They were both the same price- the synthetic felt more fluffy and sumptuous but maybe a bit 'shiny' , the wool was less 'piley'. What would people recommend in terms of style and quality- both have similar guarantees.

Personally, I'd always go for wool. Synthetic always looks, well, synthetic, to me. Not sure that either will hide dog hairs when compared to the other. A pattern would help with that...

Definitely wool.

I always go for 80:20 mix. My dad was a carpet fitter and that is what he told me to buy.

Same here with 80/20, except that I have bought polypropylene where its ability to withstand violent cleaning was especially important.

I don't like tufted carpets.

Wool without a doubt . We have wool berber in our living rooms/bedrooms and it's lovely.

Thanks all wool it is then.

Would also say 80:20 - it's more durable than 100% wool

I'd have said wool as well until we got carpet moths Angry. They love natural fibres so I'm taking no chances now - its synthetic all the way.

Synthetic don't last as long! Wool cleans better, lasts longer and over time looks a lot nicer.

lookoveryourshouldernow · 05/02/2014 19:36

...another thumbs down for wool here too...

We were plagued by carpet moths for years until we took up every single wool carpet in house and replaced them all.

Have to disagree cupcake. My synthetic carpets look like new at 2.5 years old whereas my neighbours wool carpet looked worn and tired within a year. Synthetic also cleans well and doesn't shed.
