Dishwasher best in kitchen or utility?

Just planning a new open-plan kitchen diner. We're keeping the existing separate utility room, and that's where the dishwasher is currently. It's a pain schlepping dishes through to the utility, but my worry is that if we move dishwasher into kitchen it will (a) be noisy if we have people round and (b) there will always be dirty dishes visible as we often seem to have a slight backlog... Any advice?

kitchen

modern ones are not very noisy.

Agree that kitchen is best, get a double sink so you can stack dirty dishes out of sight. They will list their decibel level so you can get an idea of the quieter models.

I've got a Bosch one that sounds like whisper in the background.

Deffo put it in the kitchen. It needs to be near the cupboards where you put stuff away.

I saw in the latest Magnet catalogue they have a sink where there is a sort of trapdoor piece of worktop to close over it and hide your porridge bowls.

my brother's dishwasher is completely soundless, it is in the kitchen diner, and you can never tell if it is on or not. It also only takes about 30 minutes for a cycle.

(not that I am jealous at all)

Pigletjohn - wow!! I like that idea......I wonder if I could hide my dirty washing in there too......Grin

Definitely kitchen. My aged parents' dw is in a lobby off the kitchen down a stone step and I find it a huge pain. I love the fact that when I empty mine I stack it below the cupboard where it needs to go and within five minutes I can have it completely unloaded and put away.

Kitchen definitely.

We only hear ours when it beeps at the end.

Would be so annoying to have to carry dirty/ clean crockery etc in/ out utility all the time. Kitchen. Washing machine goes in utility, clearly.

Kitchen without a doubt. When we moved in here, the dishwasher was in the kitchen, but at the far end, away from the sink, and even that was a right pain. You need it so you can scrape any bits into the bin, rinse anything you might want to and put the plate in the dishwasher without having to take a step, IMO. They aren't noisy - ours is often running when we are in there. They don't have the noisy spin like a washing machine.

Kitchen and very close to the sink so you can scrape/rinse before loading dishwasher. This keeps the plumbing simple preventing problems with waste pipes clogging up. Replacement of the dishwasher will remain simple too.

A good kitchen designer will design the kitchen so that stuff you have to put away from the dishwasher (pans, pots, crockery and cutlery) are within easy reach.

Thanks, everyone- that's me sorted then. Kitchen it is!

Defo kitchen - right decision.

Clargo55 · 03/02/2014 19:16

I can also recommended a Bosch, ours is silent.

TalkinPeace · 03/02/2014 20:53

mine is under the draining board, by the island and the crockery lives in the island - so no walking around with crockery ever
