Advice please - electric showers?

My electric shower has broken and needs replacing quickly - I did not enjoy my luke warm shower this morning! I am hoping one of you clever people will be able to answer my questions as I am a bit clueless when it comes to this sort of thing.

Will I need to buy the same brand of shower to fit the plumbing, or do they all come with a standard design re pipes etc? I am hoping the latter.

Is this something I could fit myself, with a bit of help from a knowledgeable friend, or should I look for a professional to fit it? And would I need a plumber or an electrician? I am a bit nervous about this as I had a shower fire a couple of years back.

And finally, is there a particular brand that is considered to be the best, or one that I should avoid like the plague? I usually go for mid-range products.

Thanks in advance for any help!

My advice would be contact an electrician and ask if they fit showers too - IME a lot do ! Tell them the make and model of your old one and they might even offer a 'supply and fit' replacement !

check it out with a professional, it is a lot easier if the shower you buy has pipe connections on the same side as the old one, so check which side they come out. also check wattage, as over a certain amount, you may need your electric board/wiring replaced, to take a heavier current.

Thanks for your replies. I'll look into finding a professional!

I would suggest you get the highest wattage shower you can afford or can fit (some need heavier duty wiring) as this will give the best flow (some are a bit feeble).
There are some good choices here (and reviews too)
