Floor stops where bathroom starts

I have a typical 2 up 2 down victorian terrace with a two storey extension for the kitchen downstairs and bathroom upstairs. The staircase is steep and narrow and at the top of the stairs, on the left, is the door to the bathroom. Now here is the problem, the door to the bathroom opens inwards and if you don't look down you will fall into the bathroom!

The previous owner installed a step but it is about 20cm lower than the landing and is half the width of the door. I haven't measured the distance between bathroom floor and landing but it must be at least 40cm. My concern is that I'll take a trip to the bathroom one night and end up on a trip to A&E!

I'm sure usually at the top of the stairs there should be a smaller landing which is level with the bathroom floor and then a step up to the main landing which leads to the bedrooms.

Is this something that can be fixed and is it likely to be costly?

Add another step? Raise bathroom floor?

I have considered adding another step but I would like something that doesn't use so much floor space. Raising the bathroom floor would mean pulling out the entire bathroom.

Maybe another step is the way to go although I was hoping for a neater, more aesthetically pleasing way...

Have you been inside any of you neighbour's houses? What do they have?

I haven't yet capsium but that's a good idea.

Could you have a false floor, then drop it around the bath, to save you pulling it out?

Ooh, that sounds interesting. I can't visualise it though, sorry, do you have any links to anything like that?

And you could tile the dropped part, something like this? www.pinterest.com/pin/509469776568538462/

I like the 2nd one. Something to keep in mind when I (eventually) redo the bathroom.

I think for now, as a temporary measure, I will rebuild the step and have 2 steps. If it is the same width as the door opening that should help. I will raise the first step to the same level as the landing so that when the door is opened it isn't a drop off as I have now.

Now, anyone ever built a step before?
