good quality inexpensive mattress recommendations

I'm looking for a fairly hard mattress. don't know much about mattresses, though have just discovered they are very expensive. If you didn't spend a fortune and are pleased with yours, where did you get it? and what kind is it?

I got mine from Laura Ashley it got 1400 springs it was half price they have sale on at mo.

You defo need one with springs in the more springs the better,

How much do you want to spend? We have Millbrook ones and they're great.

Budget: seriously, as little as possible. We're furnishing a house on a budget. We've managed to get some good quality stuff on ebay for cheap. We'd thought £250 for mattress but that now seems wildly unrealistic.

For a pocket sprung, how many springs is acceptable?

A friend said something about just getting a memory foam top layer on a cheaper mattress, though memory foam sounds soft to me and I like firm

We had a fab firm one from Harrison and before that from Hypnos (Heritage Countess Firm I think). Have just bought a slightly less firm 1500 pocket sprung with memory foam KozeeSleep one from www.mynextmattress.co.uk/ which was a really great mattress for the price. I was a bit about buying a mattress online but it's worked out ok, and they did also (for a price) take away the old one which was great as trying to arrange that with the council over the festive period wad turning out to be a real nightmare.

We had a small single mattress from Amazon Happy Beds and within two months there were large springs poking out of the sides which cut my hand, fortunately not my toddler. I asked for them to replace it as it was clearly faulty from this happening whilst a 1.5 stone toddler had slept on it. They had issues accepting it was faulty and wanted me to return it at my cost to the manufacturer rather than them. After lots of emails citing trading standards and lodging an amazon dispute they finally sent out a new mattress and collected the faulty one. The product is what you pay for but the after sales is quite hopeless. Personally I wouldn't use them again. We have used next and a local furniture company.

Ikea or mattress man.

For your budget (or pretty close) you'll get a decent mattress in Ikea. Can order online if you can't get to one, think delivery is about £18.

I did a lot of research into our mattress mainly because Dh and I are very different body weights, he is 6'3" and used to play rugby so he is a solidly built bloke.

We knew that we would need a "firm" mattress to support him but I didn't want to feel like I was sleeping on a plank of wood. I read up a lot on lots of different websites and buying guides.

The best place I can point you to website wise is here warning it plays a video the second you open that link, he cuts open two £200 mattresses and reveals that the branded one is in fact a cage mattress (cheapest mattress spring and not good quality) despite its fancy name.

We went to a local factory bed place, ie they make the mattress on site and we could dictate what we wanted in the mattress in terms of content and finish. We also chose a divan base where we could choose the colour of the fabric wrapping round the divan all the way down to the castors on the bottom.

Now I know you are thinking that this cost a fortune, well it didn't in comparison to what we could get on the high street. We actually have 2x3ft bases and zip and link mattresses. So our bed is 6ft wide with two 3ft mattresses on it. We put a quilted mattress topper on so that you cannot feel the join.

It cost £1000 for the whole thing, but we have a lot of natural products in it to keep DH cool, went for pocket sprung and a high spring count and we now refer to our bed as "the cloud".

Plus our mattress is two sided meaning it should last twice as long as we can flip it. We live in West Yorkshire but there are factory bed places all over where they make the mattress not just buy it from somewhere else. I would talk to them, they can surely custom a mattress to your budget.

Contended, I was just about to post John Ryan Beds details as well! Order placed but I have yet to take delivery but I did a ton of research before deciding to go with the outfit. Last mattress was M&S and though I had no complaints, having a natural (not polyester cover) mattress feels like I have arrived!

Loaf.com has the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. When our mattress wears out I am getting one.

Contented that sounds like the best thing to do. We're also time poor at the moment - moving next week, before which we need to do a lot of ebay picks ups, with 2 under 2s, and DH works long hours. Next time tho

The £1 idea sounds good. I was also wondering if we should order the cheapest ikea mattress and swap it for something better when funds have recovered. They have a 90 day trial period apparently

We have a pocket sprung one from Tesco Direct which was £229 and is very good quality for the price. I did lots of research and mattress testing (!) because we needed a firm one as we both have back problems. Is also great not to be woken up by DH getting in and out of bed anymore - we have quite a weight difference so pocket sprung was a must for us!!

lookdeep and anyone above with pocket sprung, how many springs does your mattress have?
we need kingsize. Would 1500 be ok? don't know how much DH weighs but his clothes size is small-medium so I don't think we'll have too much of a slope / dip problem

Ours is 1000 springs - I tried the higher spring counts but they were too firm even for me!! John Lewis also has a basic pocket sprung mattress which I thought was quite good after trying it in-store but was out of stock when we needed it.

Mine is 1400 springs from Laura Ashley king size.
We got it half price, which they still are till Sunday and if it's your first order online you get another 10% off as well

We love it, are last one costs us £700 and I'd say this is better.
