Help! We're about to have a new kitchen installed. We're having a run of low units with plain white doors, and some floor to ceiling units with wood doors (with ovens, fridge etc in). Looking at a creamy stone look laminate worktop at the mo to go on top of the low units, and pretty comfortable with that on look and price! We're also planning to have a smallish island with a couple of stools. The question is: what worktop on the island? Will laminate look cheap? Was thinking of having the sides made of the same stuff -think they call it 'waterfall' - and worried that the joins will look rubbish. Does anyone have an island like this made of laminate and are you happy with it? Do you think wood top on the island would look wrong if its not quite the same wood as the doors? Really like the 'wrapped in wood' look. Design advice needed pleaeeeeese!!

how close can you get a match to the wooden doors ?!

The doors are ikea norje - they are oak veneer I think but a bit textured. The colour of oak butchers block is actually quite similar but the texture is obv very different

If you ask for mitre joints if you do the waterfall idea that will look more professional ... Maybe take a door with you to match up - be quick though as the ikea new kitchen ranges come out on feb 3rd !!! Like the idea of white too - what about a freestanding breakfast island instead ? www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00116996/
stenstorp might work ! Is good value too ?!!?!!!

Thanks both - really like the freestanding island OnePlan but I need to fit an under bench freezer and a waste sorting cupboard on the kitchen side. Know what you mean about mitre joints - do you know if ikea do them? The ones I've seen in the store are always square joints?

Maryshelley, love wood tops on white doors as a look, but don't think wood tops is practical for us - we have small kids and v busy with work - not up for lots of maintenance ...

possibly not - as you need the right equipment ! may be better off asking a carpenter to install the worktops ?! our local council has changed it's collections to no monthly... so have been organising more recycle space myself !! it's a PITB !!

haha typo - no monthly should read Bi monthly !! lol
