Please can you tell me good places to live with easy access to the centre, on a railway line if possible, period family houses? TIA

St Leonards is nicest but also most expensive. Near to Quayside and city centre, good schools, shops, etc. Heavitree good, v family friendly. Mount Pleasant, St James very studenty. St David's is lovely in parts - lots of academics as near Uni and some amazing houses. Alphington v family friendly again, but mostly more modern I think. I'd personally avoid Countess Wear, Wonford, Whipton. St Thomas is nice and a bit cheaper, although carries a 'wrong side of the river' label... nice friendly community with good precinct and lots of Victorian/Edwardian terraces, but some think a bit on the rougher side? Pinhoe is great - further out but good railway and motorway access. All of the above (apart from maybe Alphington) have good access to city centre. Exeter is quite small so easy to get to town. Railway links from St Thomas, Polsloe Bridge (Mount Pleasant) and Pinhoe. Exeter is lovely btw :)

I've recently moved to East Devon, it's a lovely area. Everyone seems to rate Exeter, a friend used to go on and on about how great it is. I don't know the details though, but check the Environment Agency website for flood risk areas.

Thank you. We are looking at Tiverton because we are investigating Blundells school. Do you know anything about that area?

Sorry, I don't really know Tiverton at all. But the general area down here is wonderful - we moved here ten years ago and really really love Devon.

We used to live in Exeter (sob!), in St Davids. We had a lovely big house cheaper than anything the same size in St leonards. 5 mins walk from the station, 10 mins walk from the high street. Safe. Lovely small primary school. No risk of flooding.

Never been to Tiverton.

(no idea re access to secondaries if you live in st davids though as my dc were tiny back then)

Hi, I am at the University of Exeter and I am doing my dissertation on organic food consumption and need to interview a few newish mums. If anyone is interested and has a spare 20 minutes to meet in a café for a quick interview sometime next week, please email [email protected]. Any help would be seriously appreciated

Don't live in Tiverton, I used to live nearby and it looks quite pretty but it's a bit rough actually. If going towards that area I'd be more inclined to look at Wellington and Wellington School, which is in Somerset but on the border, easily comfortable to Exeter.

Avoid Tiverton - it's horrible, nothing to do. Exeter is lovely. Alphington is great, as is Ide, quite a lot of St Thomas and parts of Exwick. At David's can be quite students as is Mount Pleasant and parts of Heavitree. St Leonard's can be very pricey as is Topsham. Some lovely rural areas Dunchideock, Tedburn, Whitestone.

Moondancer73 · 01/02/2020 22:38

That should be St David's and St Thomas 🙄

SmokedGlass · 02/02/2020 21:44

Tiverton is quite run down and horrible
Try Dunsford, Whitestone, Dunchideock, Tedburn st Mary, even Cheriton Bishop
All easy reach to A30 into Exeter/M5
Train service is bad around the suburbs on the west side of Devon
Exeter now full in most areas of estates, buy to let’s and much student housing, city centre being pulled apart for new student blocks
Semi rural is the best place to be

SmokedGlass · 02/02/2020 21:46

Forgot to say my children went to Blundells and we lived in Thorverton (very pretty). Look at Dilverton too
Good roads to Blundells

SmokedGlass · 02/02/2020 21:46

Silverton not Dilverton
Fat fingers!!
