Experience with cabinet makers / copy kitchens

Dear all,

Does anybody have experience with commissioning a cabinet maker for your kitchen? I'm wondering what the difference in cost would be to buy a kitchen from a mainstream supplier (Harvey Jones, Neptune, Kit Stone etc) and asking a cabinet maker to make a copy for me?

We sold our house last month and are currently renting and ready to pounce when we find what we are looking for, but are budgeting to overhaul whatever kitchen we end up with. If any decent carcasses exist I may well take Mumsnetters advice and look to sort new doors/work tops etc but if there are none or they're minging then it'll be a case of starting from scratch and I'm not sure whether the supplier cost and the cabinet makers costs might not be that far apart in the end??

Thanks :-)
